In Canada’s first game at these 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games former Red Raider Janine Beckie scored two goals on route to securing the victory over Chile 2-1. Beckie was solid for the remainder of these Olympic games culminating in herself and the Canadian Women’s team winning their first Gold Medal ever after a thrilling finish against Sweden in the Gold Medal match.
After the match, Beckie celebrated with her Canadian cohorts in the locker room.
Beckie is now a two-time Olympic Medalist after being a part of the Bronze Medalist team in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro.
Beckie played her collegiate career at Texas Tech where the soccer team enjoyed some of its greatest success ever under the leadership of head coach Tom Stone.
“Janine Beckie has put in the work for YEARS.” Stone commented on social media. “She has believed and dreamed the day would come for her beloved Canada to stand on top of the Olympic Podium… and today she is living that dream.”
Texas Tech soccer is coming off a COVID-altered season where the team finished with a 5-6-2 overall record after going 15-4-3 in 2019. The Red Raiders went to back-to-back NCAA tournaments in 2018 and 2019 getting into the second round of the tourney in both appearances.
The squad was picked fourth in the Big 12 preseason poll and return Kirsten Davis who led the Red Raiders with four goals and two assists last season along with Macy Schultz who added three goals.
